Choose a room at AXA in Action – what is the difference between fluorescents?

May 4, 2012 in projects, slideshow

AXA in Action flooded a hotel in Prague with art, performances and installation in November 2011. Dare to Light put up a self-guided display on fluorescent lighting that is so very common in public spaces.

Pay attention to the colour temperature of light in the different pictures. This is not noticed very often when shopping for light bulbs.  We set up two rooms with different temperature fluorescents and observed the visitors’ reactions. Even though the rooms were otherwise identical (same furniture, same finish), they were perceived as completely different spaces. Some preferred one, some preferred the other. To make sense to it all, we displayed different light qualities explained in the bathroom!

It was definitely worth the setup to see the heureka moments our visitors had!

A short comedy performance with everything you wanted (and did not want) to know about how lights are made!

“Light up your life” is a short comedy performance that welcomes you to the magical world of a theatre technician.. sorry, lighting designer. Because she is a designer, not a technician. Of course. We make fun of the creative theatre crew and their clumsy efforts to communicate with each other. Maybe you will recognize yourself in one of the caricatures, hopefully you will learn something about lighting.

Dare To Light is about learning and trying out simple, practical things. It’s not about high-end lighting design, enormous installations, or rocket science. We work with good lighting ideas. The performance is a result of observations and research in several theatres.

Sound Kitchen – a little lamp experiment at the Prague Quadriennal

June 29, 2011 in projects

We performed an experimental light and music show at the Prague Quadriennal under the artist name Haywire Helium. The Quadriennal held a series of music performances called Sound Kitchen at the Prague National Theatre. The connecting line was that the pieces were written for a computer to perform. We had two!

The idea was to transform music into light – we used two smart programs to do this. We had a computer with a program called Cubase - this one played the pre-recorded music and sent it to both the speakers and the other computer. The other computer was running a program called LightJams that received the music as MIDI signals and then sent impulses to the lights through the USB. It was programmed to influence one of the six lights that were attached to the computer through a dimmer.

Thank you for helping make this event happen:

That is LightJams on the screen!

Next time we need to perform in a theatre space, we had a wonderful sunny morning outside those huge windows :)

All our lamps are second hand regular household lamps with incandescent/halogen bulbs!
